 Salutations from Puddin
FAFLSE
Schools will be opening all over the state this month.  Several departments will be outside their stations, holding up signs with similar wording, "School's open.  Watch out for our Kids." While we in the fire service are very aware of the pitfalls of those first opening days, I want to remind you that this is a perfect opportunity to shine the badge in your respective areas.  Let's remember to remind our citizens not only to drive carefully, but remember to not leave other children in vehicles while taking "just a minute" to walk a sibling to class from the car on those first few days.  Lately, there has been an increase in children left in cars who have died due to the heat. For more information on this subject, go to 4Rkidssake.com.  There you will find PSAs, announcements and other related items and links. August is purple ribbon month, in memory of Kaitlyn, who perished in her babysitter's vehicle.  Let's honor her memory by getting the word out.

Many of you have obtained your Juvenile Firesetter Curriculum kits.  Weren't they great?  If you are unsure how to use the materials contained in the box, please feel free to contact any of the FAFLSE board members.  We will have some printable instructions available for the website soon.

My personal condolences are sent to the family of Pete Tucker who lost his fight with cancer. He will be greatly missed by his Deltona brothers and sisters, and state-wide friends.  We are all better for having known him and shared his "nickel's worth."

Regards,

Important Notice Regarding Student ID's

Remember... the association no longer accepts social security numbers when signing the sign in sheets at our seminars or conferences. You will need to go to the Florida State Fire College Website, get signed in and get your Student ID. This is the only number that will be accepted.

CLOWN CLASS IS FILLING UP

CLOWN CLASS 2009

This clown class still has some openings left to completely fill the class. This is the first time ever that this clown class has been offered at such a low cost to the students, which is great timing during these economic times. The dates of the class is September 7-11, 2009, in Umatilla which is in the Southern most part of Marion County adjoining the Ocala National Forest. FREE rooming and board, this is a savings of over $200.00. The only cost to the students will be the make-up kits to a private vendor (approx. $45.00), Thursday night out for dinner as your first public appearance and whatever you spend individually for making your costume.

Pete Tucker Lost His Battle With Cancer

and Left More Than "His Nickel's Worth" In  Our Memories

Pete Tucker II7/26/09

Friends and Peers,
Like all of you, I too feel a great loss.  How happy I am that I was afforded the opportunity to know, work with and more importantly visit Pete last Monday night after work.  His condition had worsened and the inevitable too obvious to ignore.  As I leaned up close enough to hear him speak, Pete said, "The doctor's say I won't make it through this thing and IF I don't, will you say something nice after I'm gone?"  Okay, so right now, as I did at that moment on Monday, I fight back the tears knowing how silly that request was, but how privileged I felt to be asked; of course I'll do it and so will many of you.  As if the man even had to ask, right?  Many of you will likely not be able to be present for his memorial service.  I invite you all, to say what you might have said via the A list if you were able to be present.  We'll be sure his family knows just exactly how his 'other' family felt about him (although they probably already know anyway).

Pete set an example for one and all to emulate in both our professional and personal lives.  For those who didn't know him personally, let me say he was the same on both planes of life.  If H. A. "Pete" Tucker was your friend, he was your friend and for a great deal more than "Just my nickel's worth". (his closing email line you'll recall.)

I try to remember to tell things like that to those about whom I feel that way.  Pete was one guy I told on a fairly regular basis how I felt about him.  Some folks decided to refrain from saying anything to him so as not to appear macabre - as though there was no hope.  In Pete's honor, if there are some who wanted say something but never did, put it in writing on the A list forum and then promise yourself to make a practice of saying those kinds of things to those you admire on a daily basis.  No more honorable remembrance of Pete could ever be than that.

I thank my good friend; we will meet again (Acts 24:15).

Safe Heaven's Mission Continues

Dear Friends of "Safe Haven",

A Newborn, not born at the hospital, was left in the Spirit of the Law in a bathroom at a hospital in Tallahassee. The mother knew about the "Safe Haven" program and did everything right, except leave the baby with someone at the hospital. The baby was hours old, healthy and well taken care of.  His mother wanted him to have a future she could not provide. His name is "Little Red" due to his head of red hair. The baby will be placed for Adoption with a loving family.

This is the 132nd baby surrendered to a "Safe Haven". They all now have a future - Maybe the next President of the United States, Supeme Court Justices, Scientist finding a cure for Cancer or most importantly, a great mom and dad to their children.

The mission continues.....saving one life at a time.

Sincerely,

Nick Silverio

Alarm Industry Foundation of Florida Awards Scholarships

APPLICATION DEADLINE NOVEMBER 15, 2009

Many years ago there was a fine gentleman in the alarm industry named Stan Lott. Stan became an alarm dealer with a mission and made his security industry mark in a very short period of time. Prior to becoming an alarm dealer he was a school teacher. In a tragic turn of events in the 80's he passed away suddenly while on a diving trip out of the country. He has been greatly missed over these years because of his devotion and passion for education and training. In the relatively short span of his career he became the President of the Alarm Association of Florida and also President of the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association. He brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table and freely gave of himself and his resources to the benefit of every one else. Stan was generous to a fault.

His industry peers felt that an appropriate memorial to Stan would be to establish a true charitable trust in which the funds gathered would be returned to worthy applicants in the way of scholarships. Each year the Alarm Industry Foundation of Florida awards scholarships to eligible candidates. Each year the Foundation presents money to worthy students that can be used to assist in paying for their education. You will see information in the Alarm Association of Florida 'Handshake' newsletter regarding this wonderful project, and we would like to direct your attention to the AIFF web page: http://www.fla-alarms.org/Member/AIFF/index.asp

Students and children of parents within public safety/service or private sector security or who meet the other qualifications are eligible to apply for this marvelous benefit. If you know of anyone who meets these criteria, please refer them to the web site to fill out an application. Please be advised that the window for filing applications this year is between July 1, 2009 and November 15, 2009. Please make sure that all of the necessary paperwork is submitted to the foundation to complete the application in a timely fashion.
We urge all our members to take advantage of this as both an industry benefit and a practical solution to today's rising education costs. Anyone associated with financing education in today's marketplace is very familiar with what is required and every bit of additional income helps immensely.

In addition, we encourage anyone who wishes to donate to the scholarship fund, to contribute whatever you can to help us raise the continuing monies for this project. A contribution form is available for download on the web site listed above. Our thanks to all previous contributors and we seek your indulgence once again in helping us maintain this necessary work.

We thank the trustees of the AIFF for their untiring effort and invite all of you to express your thanks to them for this great project that has benefited so many over the years. Let us all continue to help those so deserving of these grants. It is only fitting to continue Stan Lott's wonderful memorial.
