Salutations from Puddin
FAFLSE I'm happy to report the FAFLSE conference committee is working hard to prepare a terrific venue for us in June.  Another "straw vote" might be forthcoming in your email.  Please take the time to respond as to if you will be attending the conference or not so plans can be made more efficiently.  Watch for the classes to be posted on the website.

"Of The Year" applications are open.  If you have a great Fire and Life Safety Educator at your department, now's the time to show that person what you think of him or her. Applications are on our website: www.ffmia.org  We're looking for outstanding educators and we know you're out there!  This year, applications are sent to Liz Monforti, Vice Chair.  Her contact information in right there on the form.

A few conference scholarships are available.  If you can't otherwise attend conference, please take advantage of this opportunity.  Each year the association holds an auction to raise money to enable other educators to attend conference.  Conference attendees purchase auction items from their own pocket so others can have the conference experience.  Again, forms are on the website:  www.ffmia.org

Speaking of the auction - have you been hunting for the most desirable item at the auction?  The auction is as good as the items and the participants.  It's always a fun event!

   Stay Safe,
   Puddin Race, Chair

Safe Haven for Newborns Continues Their Good Work
A mother gave birth to a healthy little girl at a hospital and wished to have the baby placed in the "Safe Haven" program. We spoke to the hospital - mother and the baby were doing very well. The mother had previously called our helpline - We provided her with information and clarification regarding the "Safe Haven" program, as she requested. The baby's name is: Caitlin.

A mother walked into a hospital in North Florida telling a nurse she wanted to leave her newborn girl in the "Safe Haven" program. It took a great deal of courage and compassion for this mother to do so. She wanted this child to have a future that she could not provide. The baby's name is Marjorie.

A Safe Haven for Newborns is all about Saving lives - A innocent newborn and it's mother.

Our mission continues...........Saving Lives..

2007 FFPC Code
The 2007 FFPC has become effective a couple months in advance of the Florida building Code (FBC). The FBC had to delay its implementation due to several mandates of law that could not be accomplished following the storm season and cancellation of a very critical Commission meeting in Naples. That said, there will be a two month gap between the effective dates of the two codes.

As to the make up of the Florida Fire Prevention Code (FFPC) and its content:: The initial intent with the 2004 FFPC was to provide the Florida Administrative Code (FAC) and the Florida Statutes (FS) within the document because they were both in the public's domain. This would allow persons to update their code books as changes occurred at no cost. This did not prove to be very successful. The Department received numerous inquiries during the last FFPC cycle based on outdate material simply because the FFPC material that they were relying on had not been updated.

Both the FAC and the FS change on a regular basis. Statutory changes are typically annually and usually in some form will affect Chapter 633. The FAC changes year round and seems to be an ever evolving process. We have six FAC changes being processed for rule making as we speak. As a direct result of this, many persons with a copy of the FFPC do not update them regularly thereby leaving them with stale material that has been modified or even repealed. It was determine with the input of our legal staff that the FS and FAC should not be included. We strongly recommend that you use the WWW for access to the Florida Statutes and the Florida Administrative Code since it will always provide you the latest fully adopted material to rely upon.

Finally, the tabs were not included since it only involved two documents and the publisher concluded that cost would appear excessive to produce sets of two tabs each.

St. Lucie County Fire District Hosts A Day of Dedications
SLC1 The St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD) dedicated two new stations in December.  The two stations broke ground in January of 2008 and doors opened for business in November.  The projects were finished on time and under budget in the growing south-west area of the county.

A "Tot Lot" was also completed and dedicated on the same day.  This was a joint venture slc2
of the St. Lucie County Fire District and the City of Port Saint Lucie.  Note the slide in the configuration of a fire engine.  Neighbors and children are enjoying the new addition which is situated on the corner area of the SLCFD headquarters property.

Photos depict an "Uncoupling Ceremony" at one station, the Honor Guard flag-raising at another and Board members on the "Tot Lot" slide.
