This course is to prepare the student for the Fire and Life Safety Educator I Certification.
This course is designed to provide the public educator with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully perform as a fire and life safety educator as addressed in NFPA 1035. For those who practice the multidiscipline profession of fire and life safety educator (including uniformed fire service personnel and other professionals), topics include fire behavior, community assessment, injury prevention and juvenile firesetting. The student will also develop presentation skills and learn how to formulate public education programs. This course meets the state certification criteria for Fire and Life.
Required Textbook: Fire and Life Safety Educator, Principles and Practices, 2nd Edition (Marsha P. Giesler). Please bring textbook/electronic book to class.

Instructors: Melanie Brocato
Melanie Brocato is a dedicated public safety educator with over 20 years of service in Broward County, Florida. She holds a Specialist Degree in Curriculum & Instruction and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Currently serving as a Life Safety Educator for the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, Melanie designs and delivers innovative public education programs tailored to diverse audiences and community needs. She is a certified instructor in multiple safety disciplines, including American Heart Association and American Red Cross CPR, Child Passenger Safety instruction, Stop the Bleed, and is a Certified Youth Firesetter Prevention Program Manager and Fire Service Instructor I. Melanie specializes in teaching CPR, bleeding control, teen driver safety, child passenger safety, and fire safety education, empowering communities with life-saving knowledge and skills. Her exceptional dedication and forward-thinking approach have earned her numerous awards and recognition for excellence in public education and community risk reduction.
